| History: | A wooden fort once used as a refuge in time of Indian attack, in the northeastern part of Callaway Township, a short distance southeast of the present town of Wentzville, in the area known as Dardenne Prairie. Robert Balbridge (or Baldridge), a native of Ireland and one of the first settlers in the county, obtained the Spanish grant upon which the fort was built. The place was called Pond Fort because there were a number of large ponds near it. Williams gives the name as Pond's Fort, perhaps under a misapprehension that it was connected with an individual named Pond. |
